FAMILY COUNSELING: BIBILIOTHERAPY
For counseling of All Kinds:
A Soft Approach to Opening up and Teaching Respectful, Peaceful, Insightful and Revealing Communication Through a Story and a Guided Conversation that includes and Celebrates Everyone’s Perspectives Equally in Listening and Speaking.
Facilitates Positive Family Communication, Reading Skills and Genuine Love for Reading
Family Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers and others who work with families will find The Book Club Game to be an invaluable tool to open up communication in a uniquely positive way that can be continued to be used beyond counseling. While the game bonds the family through any story shared it builds comprehension and simultaneously forms confidence in speaking, sharpens listening skills and overcomes shyness, all facilitating school success as a great bonus. Many positive things happen in an hour of counseling and the best part is that the game then can be played at home where the positive actions in that counseling hour can be repeated and reinforced in a fun way. In our busy world, where time is so limited, why not combine multiple major priorities, family communication, building reading skills and a genuine love for reading all at the same time.
Illuminating, Therapeutic Model of Positive Communication
The dynamics of the game enable the family to feel what it is like to communicate in an equally shared speaking and listening venue where answers build upon listening closely. This model of positive communication is what so many families need to learn to do and the game provides and sustains that venue offering respect, encouragement and celebration of different perspectives to each family member. Family members share life experiences as they connect to the story that they might have not shared before or from a new perspective. As the players answer questions about themselves and the characters in the story they’ve shared they discover many new things about each other and about themselves. Emotional reactions to situations in the plot and about the characters as well as expression of their own perspectives and experiences through the story often open another side of a player, many times surprising and enlightening to the other family members. Also, letting each chose the book of choice for the group to discuss allows time to appreciate a genre out of comfort zones and a journey into a loved one’s paradigm. The game teaches the players to listen and respond with respectful awareness. The Book Club Game offers an illuminating therapeutic model of positive communication that easily transfers to daily respectful conversation.
